Awning Windows

A Better Way to Ventilate Your Home
Never Do Less Than Your Best.
At Empire Home Remodeling, we believe the right window adds measurable value to how your home looks, feels, and functions. Awning windows are one of our most in-demand upgrades for homeowners across Milwaukee and Southern Wisconsin, and it's easy to see why. They’re built to invite in the sunlight and the breeze while standing tough against everything from humid summer afternoons to the harshest Wisconsin winters.
Unlike casement windows, which hinge on the sides, awning windows hinge at the top. The sash swings outward from the bottom, acting as a natural shield against rain while still allowing air to move freely. It’s a small design detail, but it makes these windows among the most versatile and weather-resistant options for any room in your home.
A Closer Look at How These Windows Function
While many windows rely on tracks that can get dirty or leaky, the awning window is all about the "squeeze." When you crank it shut, the entire sash is pulled against the weatherstripping, creating a seal that’s incredibly difficult for Milwaukee’s winter drafts to penetrate.
Awning windows also excel in those awkward spots where a standard sliding window just won't work. Because they use a smooth crank handle rather than requiring you to lift or slide a sash, they’re the go-to choice for high-up placements.

Where Performance & Design Come Together
If your current windows feel dated or aren't keeping up with Wisconsin's extremes, awning windows are worth a closer look. They're built to give you better airflow, tighter insulation, and more day-to-day control over how your home feels throughout the year.
These windows are especially effective in rooms that tend to feel warm or stagnant. The outward-opening design draws in fresh air while pushing out the stale stuff, reducing strain on your HVAC system and making your space more comfortable overall.
Here's what local homeowners tend to appreciate most:
Top-Hinged Design
Because the window opens from the bottom and hinges at the top, it creates a "natural umbrella" for your home. You can keep the sash open during a summer drizzle without worrying about water ending up on your windowsills or flooring.
Weatherproof Seal
When these windows are closed, they mean business. The sash presses firmly against the frame to create a compressed seal that blocks out freezing Wisconsin drafts. It’s a difference you’ll actually feel in your heating bill.
Crank Operation
No more struggling with heavy sashes or sticking tracks. The crank handle gives you total control over the airflow, making these the perfect choice for those hard-to-reach spots, like over the kitchen sink or high up in a bathroom.
Condensation Control
We all know how frustrating foggy windows can be in the winter. Our awning windows keep the inner pane warmer, drastically reducing that annoying moisture buildup and protecting your frames from water damage.
Beyond the technical specs, awning windows look beautiful, too. Their sleek lines and unobstructed glass offer a modern aesthetic that complements almost any architectural style, proving you can have an energy-efficient home without sacrificing any curb appeal.

Signs Your Windows Are Ready to Retire
Sometimes the need for new windows is obvious, but often it’s the minor issues that signal a bigger problem. If you’re noticing any of these "red flags," it’s likely time to consider an update:
The "Micro-Climate" Effect: If you have to wear a sweater in the living room just to sit near the window, or if you feel a breeze when everything is shut, your seals have likely failed.
The Morning Fog: Condensation between the panes of glass is a clear sign that the insulating gas has escaped. Once that seal is broken, the window is no longer doing its job.
The Wrestling Match: If your windows are sticking, jamming, or require fiddling to get them to lock, they’ve become a safety hazard rather than a feature.
Outside Noise Moving In: Windows are excellent sound barriers. If you can hear every outdoor conversation, your current windows aren't providing the density and seal they once did.
Skyrocketing Energy Bills: If your heating and cooling costs are climbing even though your habits stay the same, your windows are likely the leak in your budget.
Frequently Asked Questions
Casement windows hinge on the side and swing open like a door. Awning windows hinge at the top and open from the bottom, which gives them a rain-resistant edge and makes them a better fit for certain spots in the home.
Yes, in most cases. The outward tilt acts as a small overhang that directs light rain down the exterior rather than into your home, making it especially well-suited to Wisconsin's unpredictable weather.
Most projects involve replacing several windows at once, but it really depends on your home and goals. We’ll work through the scope during your initial consultation so you can make a decision that fits both your needs and your budget.
Absolutely. We work with homeowners throughout Milwaukee and the surrounding Southern Wisconsin communities, including Waukesha, Menomonee Falls, Mequon, and beyond.

Window Types
Double Hung Windows
Double-hung windows have two vertical glass panels that can slide both up and down in the frame at the same time. They can open very wide from either top or bottom and won’t protrude in any way whatsoever.
Casement Windows
These are hinged windows that operate with the simple turn of a crank arm that controls the opening mechanism. Depending on your home layout and what works best for you the hinge can either come on the left or the right side.
Picture Windows
Picture windows are generally very large fully stationary windows designed to let in the maximum amount of light possible. These are perfect for those seeking the best outside views and natural light coverage.
Bow Window Replacement
Bow windows give a unique 180° arc design which allows more light into your home and allows you to see a wider view. Bow window replacements are created from six windows of the same size and are not as deep as bay windows.
Bay Windows
Bay window replacement is great if you are looking for a stunning window that brings personality and function to your home. Bay windows consist of three windows at either 30°, 45°, 60°, or 90° angles and these are large enough for a seat or small mattress to fit comfortably on!
Awning Windows
Awning windows come hinged at the top and can be turned completely outwards to let air in from every single direction! They can be installed either above, below, or alongside your normal stationary windows.
Garden Windows
With a garden window, you can finally enjoy your plants and flowers year-round without worry about the weather outside! These windows project outwards a good couple of inches to give you space to put up things like photos, plants, or whatever else décor you may want.
3 Lite Slider Windows
These windows have three separate panels (called sashes) within one master frame. These windows are often chosen for all of the natural light that they allow as well as how easy it is to open both sides and let fresh air in. The 3 slider design is also very aesthetically pleasing and can operate at the touch of a fingertip!

“When installation day came, all 9 windows were installed with expertise in one day. The whole experience from start to finish was wonderful. And, we love our windows!”
